Ancient Roman Reconstructions

Palladio devoted Book IV of the Quattro Librito ancient Roman temples, presenting measured drawings based on his own surveys of ruins in Rome and across Italy. These reconstructions are not mere archaeological records — they reveal Palladio's understanding of ancient geometric practice.

The geometric analysis of these reconstructions demonstrates that the equilateral triangle method was not Palladio's invention. The ancient buildings themselves — the Pantheon, the Temple of Mars Ultor, the Temples at Nîmes and Assisi — show the same √3/2 proportional relationships that Palladio used in his own work.

This finding is among the dissertation's most significant: it establishes a continuous tradition of geometric design from ancient Rome through the Renaissance, transmitted through craft practice rather than written theory.

The Pantheon

Palladio's measured drawings of the Pantheon reveal the equilateral triangle governing the relationship between the portico's width and height, and the rotunda's diameter and internal elevation.

Temple of Mars Ultor

The Forum of Augustus temple demonstrates the √3/2 ratio in its column spacing and cella proportions — evidence of ancient Roman use of the same geometric method.

Maison Carrée, Nîmes

This exceptionally well-preserved Roman temple, which Palladio knew through earlier publications, shows the equilateral triangle in its facade proportions and plan layout.

Temple of Minerva, Assisi

Palladio visited and measured this temple personally. His drawings reveal the same geometric framework found in his own designs, suggesting direct study of ancient geometric practice.

A Continuous Tradition

The presence of equilateral triangle geometry in ancient Roman buildings, transmitted through medieval masonry practice to Renaissance architects like Palladio, fundamentally changes our understanding of the history of architectural proportion. Rather than the literary tradition of harmonic ratios emphasised by Wittkower and his followers, we find a geometric tradition rooted in practical workshop methods — the compass and straightedge techniques that were the common heritage of pre-modern builders.
